Dong Zhuo, style named Zhongying, was a native of Lintao District in Longxi Commandery. He was an astute and resourceful man with a bold and unconstrained personality. When he was young, he had traveled to the Qiang areas. He associated frequently with the chieftains of the Qiang tribes. He later returned home to be a farmer. Once, when the chieftains of the Qiangs visited him at home, Dong Zhuo killed his own herding cows to treat them to a meal of beef. He prepared wine and food to entertain them. |
| 豪帅感其意,归相敛得杂畜千余头以遗之,由是以健侠知名。为州兵马掾,常徼守塞下。卓膂力过人,双带两鞬,左右驰射,为羌胡所畏。 |

Since then, Dong Zhuo was known for his robust and chivalrous conduct. He served as Cavalry Clerk in the region, so he often stayed at and guarded the frontier. Dong Zhuo's arm-strength exceeded anyone else's. He often carried two bags of bows on each arm, and shot with both hands alternatively in quick succession while riding on his horse. For this reason, the Qiangs were afraid of him. |

Therefore, Dong Zhuo was appointed Gentleman of the Interior and rewarded with nine thousand rolls of fine silk. |

Dong Zhuo submitted another letter to the emperor and said, “Neither do I have good strategies, nor do I have outstanding achievements. Your Majesty has bestowed a great favor on me, permitting me to manage my troops for ten years. No matter the rank of a soldier, we have been close for a long time. They are grateful to me for how I have treated and supported them, so they are willing to sacrifice their lives on my behalf. I beg Your Majesty to allow me to take them to the northern regions to serve at the frontier.” |

I have heard that to stop water from boiling, it is better to remove the firewood than to skim off the water; when an ulcer breaks, it is painful, but it is better than letting it fester internally.” |

When Dong Zhuo saw the fires rising from a distance, he advanced his troops at full speed. Before dawn, they arrived at the west side of the city. Hearing that Emperor Shao was at Beimang Mountain, Dong Zhuo went there to welcome him. |

When Emperor Shao saw Dong Zhuo and his troops suddenly arrive, he was so frightened that he cried. Dong Zhuo tried to converse with him, but he could not answer. When Dong Zhuo spoke with the King of Chenliu, the King was able to describe the events that had occurred. |
| 卓以王为贤,且为董太后所养,卓自以与太后同族,有废立意。 |

Dong Zhuo believed that the King of Chenliu was wiser than Emperor Shao and had been raised by Empress Dowager, who was of the same clan as Dong Zhuo himself. Therefore, he came up with the idea of dethroning Emperor Shao and placing the King of Chenliu on the throne. |
| 初,卓之入也,步骑不过三千,自嫌兵少,恐不为远近所服。 |
早先时候,董卓进入洛阳,步兵骑兵不超过三千人,自己嫌自己兵少,怕远近各地不服从他。 |
Not long before, Dong Zhuo arrived in Luoyang with no more than three thousand foot soldiers and horsemen. He was afraid that people from the various areas would not obey him because of the small size of his troops. |

于是经常过四五天就趁夜暗中出军到附近的营地,第二天一早就大张旗鼓回来,人们以为西部军队又到了,洛阳没有人知道这种情况。 |
Therefore, every four or five days, he secretly led his troops out to nearby camps at night. In the morning, they would ride back with waving flags and loudly beating drums. Everyone thought that fresh troops from the west had arrived. No one in Luoyang knew the truth. |

Not long after, the troops that once belonged to He Jin and his younger brother He Miao were soon controlled by Dong Zhuo. Dong Zhuo then sent Lv Bu to kill the Chamberlain for the Imperial Insignia Ding Yuan. After annexing Ding Yuan’s troops, Dong Zhuo’s military power became strong and splendid. |

He asked the court to issue an edict to remove Liu Hong from the position of Minister of Works, and he himself took over this post. |

于是董卓威胁太后,下策废掉少帝,说:“皇帝在服丧期间,没有孝子之心,威仪也不像做皇帝的样子,现在废为弘农王。” |
He later threatened Empress Dowager, pressing her to issue an announcement to dethrone Emperor Shao. He said, “While Emperor Shao was in the mourning period, he did not act like a son. His manner and demeanor are unseemly for an emperor. Therefore, we should depose him and designate him King of Hongnong.” |

He got the King of Chenliu to ascend the throne, who was later known as Emperor Xian in Chinese history. |

He again accused Empress Dowager Deng of forcing her will upon Empress Dowager Yongle, who consequently died from melancholy and depression. Dong Zhuo charged that her actions violated the customs and rites a daughter-in-law must uphold in relation to her mother-in-law, and that she lacked the virtue of filial piety. Accordingly, Dong Zhuo moved Empress Dowager to the Palace of Yongan, where she was later killed. |

Dong Zhuo, together with Minister of Education Huang Wan and Minister of Works Yang Biao, wore the instruments of punishment to the palace and submitted a letter to the emperor. In order to comply with popular sentiment, these three redressed wrongs committed in the cases of Chen Fan, Dou Wu, and various other political factions. |
| 于是悉复蕃等爵位,擢用子孙。 |

The emperor reinstated Chen Fan and his associates, resuming their titles and posts. He appointed their descendants to official positions. |

Not long after, Dong Zhuo was promoted to Counselor-in-chief. When he had a court audience with the emperor, he did not need to hurry in small steps. He could bring his sword and wear his shoes in the palace hall. The emperor also honored Dong Zhuo's mother with the title Chiyang Lord and set up administrators for her. |

During this period, there were many powerful and honorable family mansions in Luoyang city, with gold, fine silk, and abundant household wealth in every home. |

Dong Zhuo was indulgent with his soldiers. He forced them to enter the wealthy households, where they raped and kidnapped women, stole money and goods. They called these actions “collecting military supplies.” |

Everyone was full of dread and fear. They felt a sense of insecurity—knowing that though they might be alive in the morning, they could end up dead by evening. |

Once, Dong Zhuo even ordered his troops to Yangcheng. At that time, people were gathering at the village shrine, and he commanded all of them to be executed. |

His soldiers not only confiscated these people's carriages, stuffed them with loads of kidnapped women, but also hung the people's heads on the shafts. They returned to Luoyang singing and shouting. |

Dong Zhuo also destroyed the so-called “Wuzhu” coin, and made small coins instead. From Zhongyu and Feilian, in both Luoyang and Chang’an, he confiscated all the bronze statues of human beings and horses. He melted them and turned them into coins. |

This action caused such an inflation that one bushel of grain now cost tens of thousands in copper cash. Besides, the small coins were very inconvenient to use since they had no fixed contour or patterns. |

Dong Zhuo had always heard that everyone in the world hated the fact that eunuchs killed good and loyal officials. Once he gained authority over imperial affairs, he attempted to restrain himself. He pretended to be benevolent, though his actions had been merciless. He employed and promoted many people from the literati. |

They moved forward to attack Taiyuan and finally broke through, destroying Hedong, the people of which area then fled to the Three Metropolis Areas. Thus, Guo Tai's troops were called the "Bandits of Baipo." All together they had more than one hundred thousand members. |

Once they assumed their posts, they called out the troops against me. It must be the two of you who have betrayed me. Have I ever treated you unfairly or unkindly?” |

Earlier, Chang’an had suffered from the disorder of the Red Eyebrow Uprising, so the palaces and offices were burned down. Currently, only some royal family temples and a yamen were left in the capital. Therefore, the emperor stayed in the yamen. Later the emperor was moved to Weiyang Palace. |
| 于是,尽徙洛阳人数百万口于长安,步骑驱蹙,更相蹈藉,饥饿寇掠,积尸盈路。 |

Dong Zhuo also forced several million people to move from Luoyang to Chang’an. Pushed and rushed by foot soldiers and cavalrymen, these people trampled each other. They were assaulted and starved as well. Dead bodies lay everywhere on the roads. |
| 卓自屯留毕圭苑中,悉烧宫庙官府居家,二百里内无复孑遗。又使吕布发诸帝陵及公卿以下冢墓,收其珍宝。 |

Dong Zhuo installed himself at an encampment in Bigui Garden. He burned all of the imperial halls, temples, official and civilian residences to the ground. Nobody was to live within two hundred li of the area. He then sent Lv Bu not only to dig out the tombs of previous emperors, but also those of dukes and ministers. He confiscated any and all treasure found in the tombs. |

During that period, Governor of Changsha Sun Jian also led various troops from Yuzhou to attack Dong Zhuo. Dong Zhuo first sent Generals Xu Rong and Li Meng to go about raiding and plundering. Xu Rong encountered Sun Jian at Liangcheng. He attacked and defeated him. Xu Rong captured Governor of Yingchuan Li Min alive but then killed him by boiling. |

Dong Zhuo's soldiers defeated the enemy to the north of the Xiaoping Ford, killing nearly all of them. |

One year later, Sun Jian collected the scattered soldiers and stationed them at Yangren Village in Liang District. Dong Zhuo sent troops led by Hu Zhen and Lv Bu to attack them. However, Lv Bu did not get along well with Hu Zhen, causing fear and confusion in the army; the troops were scattered. |

Sun Jian chased and attacked them, resulting in Hu Zhen and Lv Bu’s defeat and flight. Dong Zhuo then sent General Li Jue to plead for peace, but Sun Jian refused. Sun Jian advanced and stationed his troops at Dagu, ninety li from Luoyang. |

Dong Zhuo personally led his troops to fight Sun Jian among the imperial tombs, but was defeated and retreated to Yingchi, gathering soldiers in Shan. Sun Jian entered Luoyang through the Xuanyang Gate and attacked Lv Bu again, who was defeated and fled once more. |

Sun Jian then cleaned up the imperial temples, restored the tombs that had been desecrated, divided his forces, and moved out through Hangu Pass to the area between Xin’an and Yingchi, aiming to block Dong Zhuo’s retreat. |

The remaining Commandants and Leaders of Court Gentlemen were stationed in various districts to resist the insurrectionary army from Shandong. |

Dong Zhuo then usurped imperial style in his carriage and attire, riding in a gold-adorned chariot with a blue canopy decorated with claw motifs and two banners; people called it the "ganmo carriage" because his dress resembled that of the emperor. |

Whenever any general misspoke, he was executed before the assembly. Dong Zhuo also began killing old aristocratic families in Guanzhong, accusing them of rebellion. |
| 时太史望气,言当有大臣戮死者。卓乃使人诬卫尉张温与袁术交通,遂笞温于市,杀之,以塞天变。 |
当时太史观测天象,预言将有大臣被杀。董卓便诬陷卫尉张温与袁术勾结,于是在市上鞭打张温并处死,以平息天变的兆象。 |
The Grand Astrologer read omens and predicted that a high minister would be executed. Dong Zhuo then framed Colonel Zhang Wen for colluding with Yuan Shu, had him whipped in the marketplace, and executed him to dispel the portent. |

Colonel of the Picked Cavalry Wu Fu of Runan, enraged by Dong Zhuo’s cruelty and determined to kill him, came to see Dong Zhuo in court robes with a knife hidden in his garments. |

伍孚说完话告辞,董卓起身送他到阁下,用手抚其背,伍孚于是拔刀刺向他,但未刺中。 |
After speaking, Wu Fu took his leave; Dong Zhuo rose and accompanied him to the pavilion, patting his back. Wu Fu drew his knife and stabbed, but missed. |

Dong Zhuo narrowly escaped, shouted to his guards to seize and kill him, and cursed, “Are you rebelling?” |

At that time Wang Yun, Lü Bu, and Supervisor Shi Sun Rui conspired to kill Dong Zhuo. Someone wrote the character “吕” on a piece of cloth, carried it through the market and sang, “Bu hu!” A messenger reported this to Dong Zhuo, but he did not grasp the hint. |

Dong Zhuo put on his court garments and rode a carriage. Shortly after, his horse became skittish and threw him into the mud. He returned home to change clothes. His concubine tried to stop him, but he ignored her and set out again. |

He arranged troops along both sides of the road, from his camp to the palace, with infantry on the left and cavalry on the right, encircling him, and ordered Lv Bu and others to guard the front and rear. |

Wang Yun secretly informed Shisun Rui, who wrote an edict personally addressed to Lv Bu, ordering him and ten other brave men, along with Cavalry Commander Li Su, to disguise themselves as palace guards and lie in wait inside Beiye Gate. |
| 卓将至,马惊不行,怪惧欲还。吕布劝令进,遂入门。 |

As Dong Zhuo approached, his horse was again frightened and refused to move. Alarmed, he wanted to turn back, but Lv Bu urged him to enter, and he did. |

Li Su struck at Dong Zhuo with a halberd, but it could not penetrate his armor. Dong Zhuo’s arm was injured, and he fell from the carriage. Turning around, he shouted, “Where is Lv Bu?” |
| 布曰:“有诏讨贼臣。”卓大骂曰:“庸狗敢如是邪!”布应声持矛刺卓,趣兵斩之。 |

Lv Bu replied, “An edict has been issued to punish the traitor minister.” Dong Zhuo shouted, “You worthless dog dare to do this!” Lv Bu immediately speared Dong Zhuo and ordered the soldiers to kill him. |

Recorder Tian Yi and Dong Zhuo’s attendants rushed to his body, and Lv Bu killed them as well. |

Lv Bu rode swiftly with the edict of amnesty, proclaiming it throughout the palace and army. Soldiers and officials proclaimed “Long live the emperor!” The public danced and sang in the streets. Men and women sold their jewelry and clothes to buy wine and meat for celebration. |

The emperor ordered Huangfu Song to attack Dong Zhuo’s younger brother Dong Min at Mei Fortress, killing his mother, wife, and children, wiping out the entire clan. |

Dong Zhuo’s corpse was displayed in the market. The weather had become hot, and since Dong Zhuo was corpulent, his body fat flowed onto the ground. The officers guarding the corpse lit a fire in his navel, which burned until dawn, continuing in this manner for several days. |
| 诸袁门生又聚董氏之尸,焚灰扬之于路。 |
袁氏的各位门生又把破碎的董家人的尸体聚拢起来,焚烧成灰在路上抛洒。 |
The followers of the Yuan family gathered the corpses of the Dong clan, burned them to ashes, and scattered them along the streets. |
