Now the court is scattered and the ancestral temples lie in ruins; examining the commanderies, though they claim righteous armies, they secretly scheme against one another and show no concern for the state or the people. |

If you welcome the emperor, petitions will frequently be made; obeying him will diminish your power, disobeying him will brand you a rebel—this is not a wise plan. |
Ju Shou replied, “To welcome the court now, |
It is appropriate in principle and timely in its execution. If a decision is not made early, someone else will act before you. A strategist must seize the first opportunity and act quickly to achieve success; I hope you will consider this. |
The enthronement of Emperor Xian was not Yuan Shao’s intention, and in the end, he did not follow Ju Shou’s advice. |
Yuan Shao had three sons: Yuan Tan (style name Xiansi), Yuan Xi (style name Xianyong), and Yuan Shang (style name Xianfu). Yuan Tan was the eldest and kind; Yuan Shang was the youngest and handsome. |
Yuan Shao’s second wife Lady Liu was favored and especially fond of Yuan Shang, often praising him to Yuan Shao. Yuan Shao himself also admired Shang’s appearance and considered making him heir to his titles. |
Thus, he had Yuan Tan inherit his elder brother’s position and appointed him Regional Inspector of Qingzhou. |
Ju Shou admonished, “People say that when ten thousand pursue a rabbit, the one who catches it ends the chase for all others; this is because the winner is named. If age is equal, select the virtuous; if virtue is equal, use divination—this is the ancient custom. I hope you heed lessons from past successes and failures. If not, disaster will begin here.” |
Yuan Shao said, “I will have each of my sons govern a region to observe their abilities.” Accordingly, he appointed his middle son Yuan Xi as Regional Inspector of Youzhou, and his nephew Gao Gan as Regional Inspector of Bingzhou. |
In the first year of the Jian’an era (196), Cao Cao received the emperor at Xu and established it as the capital. He then issued an edict criticizing Yuan Shao, stating that although he controlled vast lands and many soldiers, he only built his own faction and never led troops to serve the emperor, acting instead on his own authority to attack others. |
|
Yuan Shao submitted a memorial saying, “I have heard that in times of peace, those of high virtue are highly esteemed; in times of crisis, those with great achievements are richly rewarded. Your Majesty has wandered in exile, the ancestral temples in Luoyang are neglected, and the people of the empire grieve. Therefore, loyal ministers willingly lay down their lives; even if they are executed, they have no regrets. This is the effect of loyalty and righteousness.” |
“Now, you reward the undeserving and neglect the virtuous, remove loyal and meritorious officials, and confuse the public. Is this a long-term strategy proposed by your loyal ministers, or is it the result of evil counsel from flatterers?” |
“My title is Marquis of Tong, with a fief of two thousand bushels. I have already received extraordinary favor and virtue. How could I dare covet higher rewards or request the honor of the red bow and black arrow? I am only saddened that my subordinates and soldiers’ hard work is unrecorded, and their loyalty to the state is instead treated as wrongdoing.” |
“This is why Meng Tian cried sadly in frontier prison, and Bai Qi wept at Du You. Grand Mentor Ma Ridan, holding the high office of Preceptor, was entrusted with the eastern campaign, yet he disrupted the emperor’s orders and favored unworthy men. Those he appointed were rejected by all, yet he still adopted their schemes.” |
Their schemes were taken as the guiding counsels. |
It turned my own kinsmen into enemies, pitting them against one another in violent clashes and worsening the calamity. |
Although I wish to lay down arms and withdraw, circumstances leave me no choice. |
I fear that Your Majesty’s light like the sun and moon may not reach everywhere, and that your ears may not hear all. |
I beg that my memorial be circulated among the worthy so that the Three Excellencies and Nine Ministers may examine the charges against me. |
If my exercising of royal authority now is deemed a crime, then Duke Huan and Duke Wen should likewise have been executed; if those who did not suppress rebels are to be praised, then Zhao Dun should not have been branded a regicide. |
Though a humble man, I am resolute to keep to my duty. |
If I may state my true mind without shame before the late emperor, I am willing to bow my head to the sword or strip and face the cauldron. |
I only ask that Your Majesty judge impartially, cut off slander and flattery, and not allow a foolish minister to die with a grudge. |
Consequently the court appointed Yuan Shao Grand Commandant and enfeoffed him as Marquis of Ye. |
At that time, Cao Cao served as Grand General, and Yuan Shao felt ashamed to be ranked below him; he pretended to decline the position in a memorial to the throne. |
Cao Cao was greatly alarmed, so he relinquished the position to Yuan Shao. |
In the second year, Cao Cao dispatched Chamberlain for the Palace Buildings Kong Rong with the token to confer Yuan Shao the position of Grand General, awarding him bows and arrows, a ceremonial halberd, and a hundred Brave-as-Tigers soldiers, while also placing him in charge of Jizhou, Qingzhou, Youzhou, and Bingzhou. Only then did Yuan Shao accept. |
Whenever Yuan Shao received an imperial edict, he was troubled by provisions unfavorable to him, so he tried to move the emperor closer to his base, sending emissaries to persuade Cao Cao that Xu was low and marshy and Luoyang was ruined, suggesting the capital be moved to Zhencheng for security and sufficient provisions; Cao Cao refused. |
Yuan Shao then selected 100,000 elite soldiers and 10,000 good horses to march against Xu, appointing Shen Pei and Feng Ji to command military affairs, with Tian Feng, Xun Chen, and Xu You of Nanyang as strategists, and Yan Liang and Wen Chou as generals. |
In the fifth year, Left General Liu Bei killed Xuzhou’s Regional Inspector Che Zhou, took control of Pei, and rebelled against Cao Cao. |
Fearing Yuan Shao would cross the Yellow River, Cao Cao swiftly attacked Liu Bei, defeated him, and Liu Bei fled to Yuan Shao, prompting Yuan Shao to advance against Xu. |
Yuan Shao first sent Yan Liang to attack Cao Cao’s subordinate commander Liu Yan at Baima. |
Yuan Shao personally led his troops to Liyang. |
Cao Cao went to assist Liu Yan and killed Yan Liang. |
Yuan Shao then crossed the Yellow River and stationed his forces south of Yanjin. |
Yuan Shao dispatched Liu Bei and Wen Chou to fight, but Cao Cao defeated them and killed Wen Chou. |
In the following two battles, Cao Cao captured both generals, greatly shocking Yuan Shao’s army. |
Cao Cao retreated to Guandu, while Yuan Shao advanced to occupy Yangwu. |
Yuan Shao gradually advanced toward Guandu, leading to a full engagement. Cao Cao’s forces were at a disadvantage and retreated to fortify their position. |
Yuan Shao constructed tall towers and mounds to shoot into Cao Cao’s camp, forcing Cao Cao’s men to move under shield cover. |
Cao Cao then deployed stone-throwing carts to target Yuan Shao’s towers, destroying them all; the troops called these “Thunder Carts.” |
Yuan Shao dug tunnels to secretly attack Cao Cao, but Cao Cao countered by digging long trenches inside his camp. |
He also sent elite troops to ambush Yuan Shao’s supply convoy, defeating them and burning all the grain. |
After more than a hundred days of stalemate, the people of Henan were exhausted and many defected to Yuan Shao. |
Yuan Shao sent Chunyu Qiong and over ten thousand soldiers north to escort the grain convoy. |
Ju Shou advised Yuan Shao to dispatch Jiang Qi with a detachment to support and block Cao Cao from plundering, but Yuan Shao refused. |
Xu You suggested, “Cao Cao’s army is small, but he concentrates all his forces against us, leaving the garrison at Xu weak…” |
The troops at Xu will inevitably be weak. If you send light units to conduct a night attack, Xu can be captured. Even if they do not collapse, you can force the leaders and the troops to flee, ensuring their defeat. |
Yuan Shao again refused. At this time, Xu You's family committed a crime and was arrested by Shen Pei. Xu You, frustrated, fled to Cao Cao and advised him to attack Chunyu Qiong and his forces. |
Chunyu Qiong and his men were staying at Wuchao, forty li away from Yuan Shao's army. Cao Cao personally led five thousand infantry and cavalry at night to attack and completely annihilate them. |
At first, when Yuan Shao heard that Cao Cao had attacked Chunyu Qiong, he said to his eldest son Yuan Tan, “Even if Cao Cao defeats Chunyu Qiong, I will take his camp, and he will have nowhere to retreat.” |
He then sent Gao Lan and Zhang He to attack Cao Cao's camp, but they failed to capture it. |
When the two generals learned of Chunyu Qiong's defeat, they defected to Cao Cao. |
As a result, Yuan Shao's army panicked and disintegrated. |
Yuan Shao and Yuan Tan, wearing cloth headbands, rode with eight hundred cavalry across the Yellow River to the northern bank of Liyang and entered the camp of General Jiang Yiqu. |
At the tent, he clasped Jiang Yiqu’s hands and said, “I entrust my life to you.” |
Jiang Yiqu vacated the tent for Yuan Shao and let him issue orders from there. |
When the soldiers heard that Yuan Shao was there, they gradually gathered again. |
Other troops feigned surrender, and Cao Cao executed them all by burial. |
Altogether, about eighty thousand were killed. |
Ju Shou was captured by Cao Cao's soldiers and shouted, “I do not surrender; I have merely been captured.” |
Cao Cao saw Ju Shou and said, “Because we belonged to different domains, we were separated and could not meet. Unexpectedly, we are now reunited today.” |
Ju Shou replied, “Ji Province failed through its own miscalculations. My wisdom and strength were of no use—my capture is only natural.” |
Cao Cao said, “Yuan Benchu had no strategy and failed to use your advice. Now that chaos has lasted for over a decade and the realm remains unsettled, I should join with you to plan for it.” |
Ju Shou said, “My uncle, mother, and brothers all hang on the mercy of the Yuan family. If you pity me, let me die quickly—it would be a blessing.” |
Cao Cao sighed and said, “If I had gained you earlier, the affairs of the world would not have worried me!” |
He then pardoned Ju Shou and treated him generously. |
Soon after, Ju Shou plotted to return to the Yuan clan, and Cao Cao executed him. |
Outwardly, Yuan Shao appeared refined and composed, concealing both joy and sorrow; but he was arrogant and obstinate, proud and unwilling to heed good advice, which led to his downfall. |
When the army returned, someone said to Tian Feng, “You will surely be valued by Yuan Shao.” |
Tian Feng replied, “Duke Yuan appears magnanimous but is inwardly jealous. He does not appreciate my loyalty, and I have often angered him with blunt advice.” |
“If he wins and feels joy, he might forgive me; but if he loses and feels resentment, his jealousy will surely erupt.” |
“If the campaign had succeeded, I might have survived; but now that we are defeated, I do not expect to live.” |
When Yuan Shao returned, he said, |
“I did not follow Tian Feng's advice, and indeed he laughed at me.” Therefore, he executed Tian Feng. |
Because of the defeat at Guandu, Shen Pei’s two sons were captured by Cao Cao. |
Meng Dai did not get along with Shen Pei, so he told Yuan Shao through Jiang Qi, “Shen Pei holds power exclusively, his clan is strong, his army is large, and with his two sons in Cao Cao’s hands, he will surely harbor rebellious thoughts.” |
Guo Tu and Xin Ping also agreed. |
Yuan Shao thus appointed Meng Dai as Army Supervisor to guard Ye, replacing Shen Pei. |
Military Protector Feng Ji did not get along with Shen Pei. Yuan Shao asked him about it, and Feng Ji replied, “Shen Pei is naturally forthright and upright. His every word and deed models the virtues of the ancients. He will not commit unrighteous acts just because his two sons are in the south. You need not doubt him.” |
Yuan Shao said, “Do you not dislike him?” |
Feng Ji said, “Previously we quarreled over personal matters; now I speak of national affairs.” |
Yuan Shao said, “Very well.” So he did not remove Shen Pei from office. |
From then on, Shen Pei’s relationship with Feng Ji improved. |
Many cities in Jizhou rebelled, and Yuan Shao again mobilized troops to pacify them. |
After the army’s defeat, Yuan Shao fell ill and died in the summer of the seventh year, without having appointed an heir. |
Feng Ji and Shen Pei were arrogant and wasteful, despised by Yuan Tan. Xin Ping and Guo Tu were aligned with Yuan Tan and did not get along with Shen Pei and Feng Ji. |
People wanted to support Yuan Tan, the eldest son, as heir. Shen Pei and others feared that if Yuan Tan became heir, Xin Ping and his allies would harm them, so they forged Yuan Shao’s will and appointed Yuan Shang as heir. |
